Bayeux Tapestry- French Embassy
THE CLIENT
The French Embassy in the United Kingdom represents France in the UK, supporting diplomatic relations while promoting French culture, heritage and international collaboration.
For a very special project at the French Embassy in London, we were asked to help showcase the historic Bayeux Tapestry through a series of large-format printed banners.
THE BRIEF
This wasn’t a typical large-format print project.
The banners needed to recreate the appearance and character of the original Bayeux Tapestry, allowing the imagery to sit naturally within the Embassy environment and helping to tell the story of this remarkable piece of cultural heritage.
Authenticity was particularly important. Rather than simply enlarging and printing the supplied imagery, the finished graphics needed to capture the texture, material and historic feel of the original tapestry as closely as possible.
OUR APPROACH
Our design team spent considerable time developing the artwork to achieve the right finish.
The challenge was to reproduce the intricate appearance of the tapestry at a much larger scale without making it feel overly clean or digitally reproduced. Our designer carefully worked with the artwork, recreating the visual texture and characteristics of the original material so that the finished banners retained a sense of depth and authenticity.
We also considered how the graphics would work at scale and within the Embassy itself, ensuring the details remained effective when viewed both from a distance and up close.
THE SOLUTION
We produced a series of bespoke large-format banners featuring imagery inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry, carefully colour-managed and printed to retain the detail and character of the original artwork.
The combination of detailed artwork preparation and large-format printing transformed the graphics from straightforward reproductions into something that felt much more sympathetic to the historic subject matter.
Installed at the French Embassy in London, the banners created an impressive visual display while allowing the architecture and surroundings to remain part of the experience.
THE OUTCOME
The finished installation provided a striking backdrop to the arrival of the Bayeux Tapestry in the UK, bringing a little piece of history to life through modern print and design.
For us, this project was also a great example of how signage and large-format graphics can go far beyond traditional branding. They can tell stories, interpret heritage, transform environments and help visitors connect with the subject of a space.
It was a privilege for the PB Signs team to contribute to a project celebrating such an internationally significant piece of cultural heritage.
